Pain or discomfort is usually our bodies’ way of telling us something may not be quite right. There are a range of pain symptoms which may be indicative of any one of the possible dental health issues. Ensure your patients know what to look out for so you can advise on the appropriate next steps to take.
Toothache
Constant pain and pressure or swelling can be a sign of a possible infection caused by an abscess. This will often result in severe pain and sensitivity to touch in the tooth itself and the surrounding gums and bone. In these cases, it is vital your patients see you as soon as possible for evaluation.
Pain When Biting
Decay, a loose filling, cracks, exposed root surface. These and many more can contribute to momentary pain and sensitivity. An evaluation by you or your hygienists will assist in locating the source of the pain, and offer suitable treatment options.
Sensitivity
Many people experience a sharp, sudden pain or discomfort when teeth are exposed to cold or hot. Whilst this can be a relatively benign and harmless inconvenience, in some cases lingering sensitivity and pain can be a sign of a potential dental health issue, including deep decay or pulp damage, which may require evaluation by a specialist endodontist.
TMJ – Joint and Jaw Pain
Does your jaw occasionally click and hurt when opening and closing your mouth? The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is like a hinge for the jaw, which can become inflamed, painful and even dislocated. The causes are not always clear, but can be a result of injury or grinding of the teeth. In some cases, TMJ disorders can be treated by dental or medical treatment, however some cases may require referral to a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
